WebbAlthough the theory of alternative stable states is well understood, whether multiple stable states actually occur in nature has been hotly debated, in part because of the difficulty of demonstrating their existence in nature but also because of the lack of clear guidelines regarding what needs to be checked for in the field and in experiments to Webb31 mars 2004 · During the last 20 years there have been several attempts to test the theory of alternative stable states using marine systems. The results have been mixed, and there have been conflicting interpretations of the outcomes. In an attempt to resolve some of the problems, the theory and evidence for alternative stable states are reviewed.
